Best way to extend signal without using a wireless repeater
Hey all,
I currently own a WNDR3300 and am having a difficult time obtaining a good signal in certain areas of my home. My router is isolated in the basement, wall mounted. I have all my wiring done to a single termination point so moving it is out of the question. I wanted to give the R6300 a shot; however it's non wall mountable which drove me to try the new ASUS.
I picked up an ASUS RT-AC66U and it bumped my signal a tad, but not enough to warrant the price ($200). I realize I don't need AC yet; however I wanted to future proof myself for a bit If I was going to buy something new. Anyway, being that it didn't put up the signal I was hoping for, I'm returning it and looking at alternatives.
Ideally, what I want to do is to have a second router/hub/repeater/whatever in my office. I wired ethernet to every room and have a hard wire to my desktop. This would be a great spot to drop a second device and wire my desktop from here while leveraging the wireless signal from the middle floor vs. the basement.
I tried a WN2500RP and while it saw my WiFi, it would not connect. More importantly, I don't want a device that extends my signal from an existing wireless signal and would instead prefer to have a wire into this secondary device and broadcast from there being that I have the wiring in place to support this. Yet when I look into extenders/repeaters, I seem to only find those that simply pick up an existing wireless signal and boost it from there.
What are my best options at this time? I'm willing to buy two routers if need be as my WNDR3300 is obviously rather dated at this time (even though I don't even have any n or ac devices/adapters as of now).
Thanks so much!

That's not what I was asking.
Anyway, at this stage the best bet (unless someone thinks differently), is to keep my WNDR3300 in the basement as the primary router and simply use a second router in my office as an access point.
I setup the AC66U to do this and my signal is better than ever. Now I'm at the point of debating whether or not to keep the ASUS or return it for the R6300 now that I'm not going to attempt to wall mount it.
The real reality is, do I truly need AC? It's only draft, but I'm assuming it will be finalized via firmware yeah? Regardless, the goal right now is to achieve the best WiFi signal off this secondary router as that's the SSID I'll connect to.
Any advice/input on AC66U vs. R6300? Been reading many reviews that favor one over the other ... mixed reviews all over the place; however ASUS appears to win more so than NetGear. - jmizoguchiVirtuoso

The question wasn't about the WNDR3300; therefore posting in the RangeMax routers section is not the appropriate forum. Please read threads before inappropriately posting.
Regardless, like the vast majority of your posts, you have not provided any help.
I found help elsewhere, this thread can be be removed ... or do I need to post that in a different forum?
