It is recommended to do a factory reset after a firmware update. Please keep us posted if you have done a reset and if the issue will persist.

I beg forgiveness for the slow response. I can't say whether it's working now. I'm connected to the Internet via the range extender (Home-****2.4_2GEXT). That's good. I've run the firmware update, done the factory reset with the little button in back, and restarted the extender. (That was advice I got after running network diagnostice.) So now I'm connected, but I'm still having trouble getting into the extender's dashboard. I couldn't remember the IP address, so I looked in System Preferences >> Network. In Safari, I entered the IP address I found there, but all I get then is a Google search page, not the dashboard.

The bottom line on this line of inquiry: Should I change the default UID and password on my extender from "admin" and "password" to something more secure? If the answer to that question is No, we're done. If the answer is Yes, the next question is how do I do it?

Thanks for the response. You can confirm the IP address assigned to the extender by accessing the UI of your router and check under the attached devices. Then follow StephenB's advice.
