If I connect my extended to my wifi router by utilizing the WPS buttons on both the extender and router and they connect. Do I need to do anything else? In the instructions step 6 mentions connecting ...

So, you log into www.mywifiext.net, go to Settings > WiFi but you can't change the Wi-Fi network name? Maybe you can try setting it up from scratch. You should have the option to customize the Wi-Fi name.
