D7000 as Extender

An Arris router is provided by ISP -  I've got a D7000 / 2 story house and would like to use the D7000 as extender to existing Wifi....from what I can tell, if I wanted to use it as a straight access point then I'd have to run a line to the basement which really isn't feasible.  Can I pair this device to the Arris so that it broadcasts the same SSID ?  Thanks in advance

  • The D7000 is a modem/router from what I'm reading.  That means that it will require a cable to configure it.  So you would want to put it into AP mode before moving it to where you want connectivity.  I'm not able to find out where it will mesh with your network however.  Looks like it will become it's own network.  Which means a different SSID for upstairs and a different one downstairs.

Coaleyed is correct in that it doesn't have wireless repeater/extender mode.

you'd have to run it in access point mode and hardwire it in. This could be via ethernet, moca adapter, or powerline adapter.

You can set the ssid to the same as your other network but it isn't going to be a mesh network. It won't roam like a mesh network will be and it'll be "sticky" meaning a device will pretty much have to loose all signal before it'll swap to the other ssid. You'd be better to set it up with a seperate ssid and manaually swap. but you can use the same.

Or you could invest in an actual wireless mesh repeater at some point and have it function how it should.
