I have tried everything. I have reset the router multiple times, tried to connect using mywifiext as well as using WPS. Both ways will get me to the point where the wifi extender is set up, but once I...

Your first post made it seem as if you can connect to the mywifiext address
One thing to try is after its setup, log into your router and check its attached devices page. See if the extender is connected here and what its ip address is. Use that ip address to try to connect to it.

It’s an xFi gateway. The extender was working for months until there was a power outage and I wasn’t able to reconnect it since. Have tried rebooting the gateway to see if that helps and it doesn’t.

2 things to try.
1. reinstall the firmware to the extender on it. (even if you're current). Maybe something was corrupt in the firmware
2. Make sure the xfi gateway's 2.4ghz is using wpa2 and not wpa3
