EX6200 Extremely Slow Speeds

I have AT&T GigaPower.  The router is on the first floor of my home and can't be easily moved.  I purchased a Netgear WiFi Range Extender (EX6200) in an effort to improve the performance of an AppleTV & PlayStation 4 located on the second floor of my home.  I have attempted to set the device up as both a range extender (located on 2nd floor) & access point (located on first floor) to no avail.

When connected to the Netgear EX6200 in wi-fi extender or access point mode, the speeds are extremely slow.  Notably, I am not expecting like-for-like speeds, however I am better off connecting directly to the router which again is on the first floor.

Is there anything additional that I can try in an effort to enhance the performance of the Netgear device prior to returning it?

You can try to change the wireless channel on your router and make sure the extenders are on the latest firmware.

I will try changing the channels on the router.

Also, while reading some literature about my router, it was suggested that the SSID name/password for both the 2.4 & 5 Ghz networks remain the same to take advantage of enhanced router technologies.

Does this in anyway impact the Netgear EX6200; either extender or access point mode?

Lastly, I did update the firmware, however I experienced problems with my email address login.  It appears as if the firmware that was installed on the device allowed me to setup my email address with special characters '.'.  However, when I upgraded to the latest firmware version, it appears as if the code does not like the '.' in my email address.  Each time I attempted to login, I received an error message (invalid email address).  I then re-registered with another email address and used a '_' opposed to  '.' and everything worked.
