I think I solved the problem by giving the router a fixed wLAN channel (48) and the repeater another (40). Haven't had this issue since.

I've been having the similar issues (same model, same firmware version). I've modified the settings so that router and extender have different channel numbers. Hope this works for me as well.
When I called NETGEAR support, they've asked me downgrade the firmware to the initial release.. Rather than downgrading the firmware, I came to this site, and found your message. Thanks for posting your details.

I have the same issue with the same model and firmware and can't find the solution!
I don't have the option to change the WiFi Channel.
Help!

The option to change the wifi channel in on your router not the extender.
