Extender will not connect with Dlink router! Please help!

I am not sure if my extender is not connecting to my router or my computer and iPad are not connecting to the extender. I am trying to connect the extender to my D-Link DI-524. I have followed the instruction 10 times and the last section of the instal program fails to connect to the router. It keeps asking for the pass phrase but I know it is correct because I logged out of my D Link router and connected back using the same pass phrase as I am trying with the extender. My D Link is a WPA security so I am not sure if this is the problem or what. I hope someone can help.

    Please change the security mode of your D-Link DI-524 from WPA to WPA2. On your laptop remove the old SSID from the preferred networks and reconnect and type again your passphrase.

    Let me know if this works.
