How to open ports

I need to make sure Port 37 is open for my TIVO to work.  NOT being an IT person, a lot of jargon that makes perfect sense to a lot of you means nothing to me.  Is there a step by step instruction somewhere that could lead me to finding if that particular port is open, and how to open it if not.

I can connect to my router with an ethernet and connectivity is good, in fact that is where I am writing this from.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

    You don't need to open any ports for basic Tivo operation. Opening ports usually refers to allowing inbound access. Well, the Tivo doesn't need inbound access. Port 37 is used for outbound access. The router by default allows all outbound access.
