Is there a preferred way to angle antennas on a wifi extender

AFAIK, the antennas are fairly omnidirectional.  Technically, the pattern will be donut shaped, like this:

 

Parallel and straight up and down will probably be best for devices on the same floor.  Angled but still parallel to each other if you really want to cover devices above or below.
