my browser keeps connecting to www.mywifiext.net when i try to visit other sites

Hello,

I recently bought the wifi range extender WN2000RPTv2, but the way it is now it's practically unusable.

I installed it all, did the netgear smart wizard etc, and the connection basically works, but when I try to visit certain homepages, for example wikipedia articles, the browser connects to www.mywifiext.net, to the netgear genie, and asks me for the username and password, instead of connecting to the wikipedia page.

If I try to go back or cancel the window asking me the username and password, and try to access the homepage I wanted to visit again, it gives me a 404 not found message.

I don't want it to automatically connect to www.mywifiext.net, as I've already installed everything. This way it makes it impossible to visit certain sites. Is there any way to change this or do I just have to throw the thing away?

The firmware is up to date by the way.

I would really, really appreciate some help, I'm going crazy here.

  • ... oh yeah this is probably the most annoying thing Netgear has build into their router software ... and I couldn't figure out how to stop this (which is extremely crazy) and wasted about an hour, before I tried (successfully) the "Clear Recent History" (Firefox) ... everything ... until before I started setting up my Netgear router ... that did the job ... it's not beautiful but, at last, it worked ... cheers and good luck ...

  • I too had this annoying problem after installing the EX2700. Every time IE was opened, instead of displaying my home page (Google) it would attempt to login to the EX2700 management. If my laptop was not connected to the EX2700's Wi-Fi network, a page not found message would be displayed. If the laptop was connected to the EX2700's Wi-Fi network, the EX2700 management login screen would appear. Netgear Support was not able to come up with a solution and I couldn't find one on the web. Clearing IE's browsing history and cookies had no effect. I went to the trouble of setting up Firefox as an alternative browser and started using it. I then had one final try at fixing the IE problem, and lo and behold happened upon the solution. I clicked the arrow next to the Home icon on the IE Command Bar, clicked Remove, clicked on http://www.google.com.au and thus removed it. I then went into Tools\Internet Options and re-entered www.google.com.au as my home page and hey presto, the problem was fixed. Mind you if I am connected to the EX2700's WIFI network IE still attempts to login to router management. But at least when I'm connected to my usual WIFI network IE does not exhibit the issue.
