My PC is situated in my study whilst my TalkTalk router is in my front room some 30 feet away. I am not very technically minded but as I had connection problems with my PC I decided to try a 6100 Ext...

Hi CornishDave,
There are two ways to update your EX6100.
Either automatically by clicking "check for update" on the settings page
or by manually downloading the file from the link provided above, then uploading it on the settings page.
The download is a .zip file, which you can open with a program like WinRAR. Inside is a .chk file, you would upload this file in your settings page.
See page 40 of 48 for instructions:

Hi CornishDave,
http://kb.netgear.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/20233/~/product-faq%3A-powerline-adapters
No. NETGEAR does not recommend using power strips, surge protectors, UPS and extension cords with Powerline products. These devices filter out some or all of the high frequency signals used in Powerline communications. Connecting a Powerline to one of these devices can greatly reduce the data rate of transfers, or block communications entirely.
It's possible that your WiFi network is experiencing interference from neighboring networks. You can change your WiFi channel by following:

Also connect to your EX6100 and login to mywifiext.net and check if your EX6100 is running the latest firmware version 1.0.1.36

Thank you, it is working at present, the answer for some reason seems to be switch on the PC before the internet radio. For the moment I will let sleeping dogs lie but I will retain your advice. I did check the firmware update and downloaded this but I cannot open it. Presumably whatever I need is not on my PC, what do you usually use to open this update?
