Netgear extender WN3000RP

Hi....I am trying to update the firmware for the above extender. I have downloaded the file and it is a winzip file which is saying I need to purchase their product to open the file.

The trial period has run out and therefore I need to purchase.

My question is, is there another way to download the file without having to use winzip.

When directed to download, the download is automatically downloaded using a winzip file, so not sure how to use an alternative file.

Any clues?

  • WinZip is a commercial program.  You don't really need it.  Windows should be able to natively unzip files, so uninstall WinZip.

Then download the firmware once more.  It will probably be saved to the Downloads folder.  Open the folder, right-click the file and select Extract All.

Thank you Ether.....I managed to find the solution on a utube demo. It effectively follows your instructions. I opened the file which was  in the downloads folder by right clicking and on it using windows explorer to open it. I then copied the file ending in .chk which was the larger file, into netgear site, which uploaded it into the extender.

I have explained this in detail as there maybe others who are interested in doing the same. It would be good for netgear to inform their customers about this as it avoids the cost of purchasing winzip.

  • I have other network addresses in the house all of the same name, As I travel throughout, the smart phone catches the DNS and doesn't have to look at a name. I want my extender to be named the same as the others. Can you delete the _EXT extention? If so, how?
