Ok, i have got it running. I started from the beginning again, I replaced all cables, did factory reset on modem and netgear and got the ethernet cable to computer and netgear working, range extender is now also working. I don't really know what I did, but thanks Stephen B for your input.

I understand, (google search) that the "CMD" on a Mac is opened via "Terminal" that is in "Utilities in Applications" so i enetered ipconfig/renew and pushed enter and this came up.

Sorry, I have no idea how to do that either, I am pretty much a novice when it comes to technical side of things on a computer. Also I have no idea how I would try "pinging the router" if and when I had a valid IP address.
Thanks

Sorry, forgot that you were using a Mac. I don't own one, but I believe the correct procedure for OS X is is to
- Click the Apple button and choose System Preferences.
- Click the Network icon in the Internet and Network section.
- Select your method of connecting to the internet (Ethernet or Wi-Fi.)
- Click Advanced.
- If you selected Ethernet, you should already be in the TCP/IP tab heading. If you aren’t, or if you selected Wi-Fi, click the TCP/IP tab heading.
- Click Renew DHCP Lease.
- Click OK to exit the Advanced window, and then exit System Preferences.
