Netgear WGR614v10 repeating does not work-please help

Hello all

i purchased 2 brand new netgear WGR614v10 routers specificallyso i could repeat wifi signal
howevr i have been disappointed with the result

router1 is connected to my broadband modem and is my master

the other router is bought specifically for repeater duty

i have followed every step of the following tutorial
http://support.netgear.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/965

however my notebook just cant seen to connect through the repeater
i.e the repeater is useless

following are the setting on my base station

basic setting
internet IP : get dynamically from ISP
DND : get automatically

wifi setting
SSID : skynet1
region asia
channel 1
mode uto 150mbps

security WEP
encryption 64bit
KEY1 : 0920439***

wireless repeating function
base station is selected and the MAC address of my 2nd router (repeater) has been entered correctly from the sticker on its rear

LAN setup
IP 192.168.1.1
DHCP range
192.168.1.2 to 192.168.1.98

Following are the setting on the repeater router

wifi setting
SSID : skynet1
region asia
channel 10
mode uto 150mbps

security WEP
encryption 64bit
KEY1 : 0920439*** (same as that of the base station)

wireless repeating function
wireless repeater is selected and the MAC address of my 1st base router has been entered correctly from the sticker on its rear
the repeater IP shown is 192.168.1.99

LAN setup
IP 192.168.1.99
DHCP - is greyed out ( this happens automatically when i selected the repeater function)

the above setup does nto work
though the repeater is centred in my house

though i can conect to skynet 1 from all parts of the house except a few - the signal is very weak and drops many times - basically i am connected to the BASE station NOT the repeater

to make sure of this i turned off the repeater - i get the same weak signal

turning on the reapeater does NO good
i still have the same weak signal that drops

NOW if i hard wire the base station to the repeater and hard wire the repeater to my notebook - everything woeks fine and dandy through the hard wire

BUT wifi
thats a complete no no

i have also tried giving the repeater a differnt SSID
say skynet2

when i do this
i cant seem to connect to skynet2 manually from my notebook even when i stand next to the repeater when i do this

PS i have tried different combinations of IPs too keeping in mind the DHCP range etc
still doesnt work

what am i missing?/doing wrong

help would greatly be appreciated

i assume i dont have to flash dd wrt since this router is already meant to be used as a repeater etc

  • 1. what role does "channel" play in the wifi repeater seup
in this wifi repeater setup - why cant the base and repeatr have differnt "channels"

    Use different channel

    2. why do they recommend that we use different channels in the tutorial where the repeater is used in the wired setup ( i.e http://support.netgear.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/965)
but they ask us to use the SAME channel is the tutorial where we use the repeater in wifi setup (i.e here - http://vpncasestudy.com/download/WDS/WDS_Concept.pdf)

People has found different channel are better

    3. what if i assign the repeater a diff SSID from that of the base and force my notebook to connect to the new one
would the repeater still work and pass on internet?

    Will NEVER work

    4.
my notebook i on static settings
ip 192.162.1.14 - which is in the dhcp range of the base
    gateway is set at 192.168.1.1

    DNS is 202.88.130.67

    Your choice, simply preference
  • update report

i have been able to hard wire my notebook ( wifi disabled ) to the repeater and get an internet connection off it !

this means the base station and repeater ARE communicating wirelessly!

now i just need to get the notebook to communicate wirelessly to the repeater

will play around with the channels and report back

P>S : in the all WIFI setup how will i know my notebook is getting internet off the repeater and not the base station - other than judging from the signal strength ( which is a dumb way to judge in anycase )
(since i am using the same SSID)
  • Happy to report

    its working at last!

a big thank you to jmizoguchi for his continued support and ggift_1029 too

For the benefit of other im posting how it worked
i followed the following tutorial to the T
    http://vpncasestudy.com/download/WDS/WDS_Concept.pdf

    the trick was the powercycle

i did it in the opposite direction

conventional wisdom would say to first start the modem, base, repeater and lastly the device

    i did the exact opposite

you then check the router status of the base and repeater to check which wireless devices are connected

the repeater should show your notebook , ipad and an unknown device which is actually your base - showing the base is most important
the base should show - the repeater as a connected wifi device in the "attached devices tab

P.S i am using the same channel on the repeater and base
