Netgear WGR614v10 repeating does not work-please help
Hello all
i purchased 2 brand new netgear WGR614v10 routers specificallyso i could repeat wifi signal
howevr i have been disappointed with the result
router1 is connected to my broadband modem and is my master
the other router is bought specifically for repeater duty
i have followed every step of the following tutorial
http://support.netgear.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/965
however my notebook just cant seen to connect through the repeater
i.e the repeater is useless
following are the setting on my base station
basic setting
internet IP : get dynamically from ISP
DND : get automatically
wifi setting
SSID : skynet1
region asia
channel 1
mode uto 150mbps
security WEP
encryption 64bit
KEY1 : 0920439***
wireless repeating function
base station is selected and the MAC address of my 2nd router (repeater) has been entered correctly from the sticker on its rear
LAN setup
IP 192.168.1.1
DHCP range
192.168.1.2 to 192.168.1.98
Following are the setting on the repeater router
wifi setting
SSID : skynet1
region asia
channel 10
mode uto 150mbps
security WEP
encryption 64bit
KEY1 : 0920439*** (same as that of the base station)
wireless repeating function
wireless repeater is selected and the MAC address of my 1st base router has been entered correctly from the sticker on its rear
the repeater IP shown is 192.168.1.99
LAN setup
IP 192.168.1.99
DHCP - is greyed out ( this happens automatically when i selected the repeater function)
the above setup does nto work
though the repeater is centred in my house
though i can conect to skynet 1 from all parts of the house except a few - the signal is very weak and drops many times - basically i am connected to the BASE station NOT the repeater
to make sure of this i turned off the repeater - i get the same weak signal
turning on the reapeater does NO good
i still have the same weak signal that drops
NOW if i hard wire the base station to the repeater and hard wire the repeater to my notebook - everything woeks fine and dandy through the hard wire
BUT wifi
thats a complete no no
i have also tried giving the repeater a differnt SSID
say skynet2
when i do this
i cant seem to connect to skynet2 manually from my notebook even when i stand next to the repeater when i do this
PS i have tried different combinations of IPs too keeping in mind the DHCP range etc
still doesnt work
what am i missing?/doing wrong
help would greatly be appreciated
i assume i dont have to flash dd wrt since this router is already meant to be used as a repeater etc

- jmizoguchiVirtuosoURL is for using ethernet cable between two devices so repeater function setting in the router is USELESS

Make sure you are using wireless Mac address under router status - magmaAspirant^^
lovely thanks for the new tutorial
i see only two key differnces from the tutorial i used (for wired networks)
1. the MAC addresses of all your wireless device should be entered in the "setup access" list in the advanced wireless menu of the router
2. the new tutorial asks us to keep the "channel" same across all repeaters and base station
However
i have followed the new tutorial
still the same problem persists
i have low signal ( in fact i can browse though the icon in system tray keeps showing " acquiring network address " - doesnt stabilise )
now if i change the channels
i.e channel 1 in base station
and channel 6 in repeater
i Get EXCELLENT signal ( something i have never gotten earlier)
BUT - no internet access
so in effect basically im still back to square one
i.e i can connect to the repeater by changing channels with excellent signal strength - but no internet access
or i can keep the same channels and have the same old low connectivity - making the repeater useless
what is wrong? - magmaAspirant^^^
lovely
thanks
i see that the difference between the tutorial i posted and the correct one you posted is
1.The additions of MAc addresses of all wireless devices on the setup access list of both the base station and the repeater
2 the "channel" of the base and repeater must be the same
now i have followed your new tutorital
problem still persists
however when i change the channels (i.e channel 1 on base and channel 6 on repeater) = i get an Excellent wifi signal - something i have never got
however not internet access!
damn
when i change the channels back so that the base and repeater are the same
then im back to square one as i said
low signal- with drop connectivity
are you sure the channels have to be the same
and if they are not the same - why no internet access even though the signal is very strong? - The Mode should not be upto 150 mbps. The router is a G-router, so it runs upto 54 mbps only. Plus the security type that you're using is WEP which will provide upto 54 mbps also. And after setting up everything, make sure to do a powercycle to the repeater and router.

what is wireless mac address
my router status shows only two mac addresses
internet port mac address and LAN port mac addresss ( which is the same as the sticker)
i have used the LAN port mac addressggift_1029 wrote: The Mode should not be upto 150 mbps. The router is a G-router, so it runs upto 54 mbps only. what is powercylce?
@all
the above leads me to assume that my notebook can communicate with the repeater- which is evident from the "EXCELLENT" signal i receive when i use diff channels ( base and repeater)- (albeit NO internet connectivity)
i think the issue here is that there is no wifi communication between the base and repeater - (internet doesnt flow between them)
what do you guys think is the problem - jmizoguchiVirtuoso
what is wireless mac address
my router status shows only two mac addresses
internet port mac address and LAN port mac addresss ( which is the same as the sticker)
i have used the LAN port mac address
LAN and internet port mac address will not work on wireless.

you should able to find the correct mac addresswhat is powercylce?

you should able to find the correct mac address
well i checked in the wireless repeating menu
the wireless mac address is the same as the LAN port mac address which is the same as the one on the sticker behind the router
which is the same that i have used for my setup - jmizoguchiVirtuosoYou other option is that since WDS weaken the security with WEP ONLY, consider extender
Wn2000rpt,wn3000rp - magmaAspirantok can you guys help me out understanding the following
(it will help me figuring out stuff)
1. what role does "channel" play in the wifi repeater seup
in this wifi repeater setup - why cant the base and repeatr have differnt "channels"
2. why do they recommend that we use different channels in the tutorial where the repeater is used in the wired setup ( i.e http://support.netgear.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/965)
but they ask us to use the SAME channel is the tutorial where we use the repeater in wifi setup (i.e here - http://vpncasestudy.com/download/WDS/WDS_Concept.pdf)
3. what if i assign the repeater a diff SSID from that of the base and force my notebook to connect to the new one
would the repeater still work and pass on internet?
4.
my notebook i on static settings
ip 192.162.1.14 - which is in the dhcp range of the base
gateway is set at 192.168.1.1
DNS is 202.88.130.67
i hope these setting are correct
i assume they are because i can connect wirelessly to the base with them - magmaAspirantthe tutorials dont talk about the DNS setting on the wireless device
they only ask us to input a static IP and gateway
what about DNS ?
