For anyone take drastic or complicated steps to fix this problem, one thing I would suggest you do first is move your extender unit to an electrical outlet is very close to your main router, and then power it up. I just tried this for my extender that would only light up the amber power light and go no further, and when I move it close to the main router, the lights turned green as they should, and then I moved the extender back to where it needs to go, and it started working fine.
