Just paid $160 for a WiFi extender. Couldn’t get to connect so I called support. He wanted to charge me to help. When I told him no, he hung up on me.

What actual extender did you buy?
What router are you trying to connect it to?
Where is it failing in the process? (details help)

If you've already tried using wps, factory reset it by pushing and holding reset for 7-15 seconds while powered on. Then try the assistant.
There's a lot of scam sites if you google for netgear support.
To get a hold of support. Click on "MyNetgear" at the top.
Register an account (or login) and then the device.
From there you can start the support process. Keep in mind that its only free for the first 90 days.
