Opening all ports on a DGN2200..

Morning All,

Wonder if anyone can help me. I am having a problem with the BBC iPlayer Android app whereby it won't stream any programs. It works on the work WiFi and over 3G but not at home. This leads me to think that my firewall may be blocking whatever ports the Android app uses (iPlayer website works fine). To prove this I want to open all ports and see if the app then works, I can then track down the individual ports of interest.

I can't work out how to do this from the DGN2200 admin pages, though. I tried adding a custom service to the firewall rules table with a port range of 1 to 65535 but I got an error saying that the service port was in use. I then set up two different rules, one using a range of 1-80 and the other using a range of 81-65535 and it allowed me to do that (??). The iPlayer app still didn't work, suggesting I had the setup wrong or the problem lies elsewhere. I'm hoping its the former!

Can anyone advise on how I might go about troubleshooting this problem?

Cheers,
Al.

  • Having the exact same issue and hve no idea what the problem might be so I'm bumping this to try and find out if anyone has any thoughts.
  • I'm not convinced it's a port problem, can't quite believe that the BBC would require that level of setup to make the app work. I can watch TV on the iPlayer app on my phone but can't listen to radio. I tried putting my old Netgear DG834 back in and everything worked fine, so it looks like the DGN2200 is the issue somehow.

So, not much further forward, I'm afraid :-(

  • Thanks for the response Al! No well I had no clear idea what it was, so I didn't specifically think of ports as the issue. However your description of the problem was the first i'd seen that matched my own. It was only this evening after having this new router a couple of days that I realised that it was the router itself that was the problem. This when I noted my phone worked fine when it wasn't on wifi but using the phone network. Laptops seem to work fine over wifi but the android iplayer app (video and audio) also the website through the browser in android and one other non BBC audio stream I use on the phone are no go. Again all this is fine over the phone network. This is the same for 3 different android phones in the household
  • I had to give up in the end and use the laptop for listening to radio on the iPlayer. Must be router related somehow, but I don't know what. Maybe there's some logging in it somewhere which might point to the problem..

  • Hi Al,

Yeah well I'm going to contact support as soon as i get more of a chance. It's not just the iplayer content for me (Audio and video) it's also the audio at twit.am which i use a lot.

If I find a solution I'll be sure to get back to you about it. Otherwise I'll be returning the DGN2200v3
  • Just to let you know Al. I ended up returning the router to the store I got it in. I waited on support as long as I could but I was running out of time to return it.

Support was ok. I chose to go through email as phone support seemed inappropriate to the difficulty of the situation. The case was eventually escalated to 2nd level support. They promised to try and replicate the issue. I got messages saying they couldn't and requesting more time. Then Eventually a message that it couldn't be replicated because of their location. (BBC apps and all. I would have thought this obvious previously if they had really tried to replicate the issue before that.) That they would forward it to a UK representative.

As far as I can tell this has never happened. I got my most recent message today asking for more time fromt he same rep who was outside the country.

In any case I had given up and replaced it as I mentioned. The new router fixes the problem. I should also point out it makes general performance better again too. More what I was used to before with my old router I used previous to all this but with better range.

Performance had seemed bad in general even on everything that worked with the DGN2200v3 and I had thought i may have been projecting my dissatisfaction at specific issues onto general performance. Seems not so.

So as there were general performance issues too which I hadn't been certain of before. I think maybe it was a faulty item. Can't be sure.
  • I'm not sure if I was clear because the post hasn't cleared moderation yet. So to be clear the replacement that works fine was not the same model router but a completely different one.
  • Seems I have the same issue in that all works - except the new BBC iplayer - well actually we are talking the media player - for the android.

Tried updating to the latest version ( not sure if it is right as says North America ? ) but that did not fix the issue.
