Slow internet speed using a N300 wifi extender

Hello! The dowload and upload speed on the wifi extender is extremely slow. I realize that a wifi extender usually has half the speed of the router, but the speed is MUCH slower then that. The router is around 35 mbps, while the wifi extender is about 1mbps. I even tried changing the channel on my router but it didn't do anything. Any help is much appreciated!
