The netgear_ext network is no longer being created (NETGEAR WiFi 6 AX1600 EAX12)

I purchased the NETGEAR WiFi 6 AX1600 EAX12 (model number: EAX12-100PES), and it has worked perfectly until recently. Suddenly, none of my devices can connect to the extender anymore.

The WiFi network NETGEAR_EXT is no longer visible or being broadcast. Here is what I have tried so far:

  • Full reset of the device (multiple times)
  • Firmware update via Ethernet connection
  • Waiting for the device to reboot and stabilize (power LED is solid)
  • Connecting to 192.168.1.250 via Ethernet — which works — but the extender does not create or broadcast the setup WiFi network

Despite all this, the NETGEAR_EXT network does not appear, and I am unable to reconnect or configure the device wirelessly.

If pressing the Reset button (inside the tiny hole on the side of the case) for more than 7 seconds does not return the EAX12 to factory settings and begin broadcasting NETGEAR_EXT, my guess is that the EAX12 is dead.

Fortunately, WiFi extenders are relatively inexpensive and readily available.

Sorry. Neglected to ask if the EAX12 was plugged in when doing the Factory Reset.

(it can be really awkward to find that tiny hole if the EAX12 is plugged into a wall socket.  When messing with these devices, I often plug them into an extension cord until ready to move them to a permanent location.)
