VPN connection issues on GR614 v9
Hello experts
I have to admit that I know close to nothing about networks/routers etc (although I have been working in IT for past decade) so please go easy on me:)
I have been with Virgin Media for past 3-4 years (10Mbs broadband package). They have provided me with cable modem (Cisco 2100) and wireless router (Netgear GR614v9). I am using that connection when working from home and VPN-ing to one of the customer's system (using Cisco x64 VPN client ver 5.0). I have had problems with VPN connection from Day One. When I am trying to use VPN via wireless connection (Netgear router) it fails (roughly 4 times out of 10) to connect at all and even if it does connect, it is not stable (it kicks me out of VPN when my GF is using internet in parallel). I have tried changing settings on the router but since I am total amateur I gave up and started using wired connection (I have plugged myself in directly to mentioned cable modem). That setup works flawlessly (naturally). However I have moved recently and putting LAN cable from Virgin socket to where my office is will be hell of a job. I'd much rather use wireless connection instead. Can anyone advice me how I can set it up so I could VPN via Netgear router and have a stable connection even if there are multiple devices using same router in parallel?
I would much appreciate if you could give me a step by step explanation how to do that:)
PS. One guy told me that solution could be to disable DHCP and set fixed IP addresses for all devices in my household (presumably tied to their MAC addresses?!?). Is that the way to go?
Regards
Michael

- jmizoguchiVirtuosotry putting it's pc on DMZ and see how it goes or open the ports in the router
- Michael79NoviceJune, thanks for prompt reply, however as I mentioned I am a total rookie in this area so let me see if I got it right...

The only DMZ setting I can find is "Default DMZ Server" where I need to assign IP. First of all my internet provider does not supply fixed IP (nor my customer requires it in order for VPN connection to work). Will your suggestion regarding DMZ still hold then?
If it does then would it be fair to say that what I need to do is to assign to a PC I am using for VPNing a internal fixed IP and then use same IP as a "Default DMZ Server"?
Also, according to documentation specifying a Default DMZ Server can pose a security risk so I am not sure if I should go ahead with that.
On the subject of opening ports all I can find in the settings of my router is "Port Forwarding" and "Port Triggering" but its all black magic to me.
Could you please provide a bit more detail explanation (preferably step-by-step procedure or perhaps link to some blog or something) on how to go ahead about implementing what you have suggested? I am sorry but as I said I know very little (almost nothing) about networking. - jmizoguchiVirtuoso

???
you assign IP which device behind the router which needs DMZ .Also, according to documentation specifying a Default DMZ Server can pose a security risk so I am not sure if I should go ahead with that.
one way to test regardless of make it's pc unsafe but any third party firewall on pc can protect that - Michael79NoviceK, problem is solved. Solution was very simple indeed ... I just changed the router:) I got myself Linksys E2000 and did not have a single problem (no changes to config was necessary).
I guess that products like GR614v9 are suited more for pros that know how to change their config to support more demanding setups.
