Where have I gone wrong?

I am a newbie trying to set up a network so I can share the connection with my tablet and another computer. Something I must be doing wrong. The lights on the router are coming on but can't connect to the internet. I can see it trying to connect but it just will not.

Running Windows XP sp3. Connecting Earthlink Zyxel 660R modem to Netgear 614v3 wireless router on the internet port. Then connecting ethernet from back of computer to Lan on router. I also have a Linksis wireless adapter. I don't know which equipment to configure first? Been working with this for weeks. So frustrating please HELP!!!

Since I do not have Earthlink's Home Networking Service would this still apply to me? (you have to buy their equipment) I tried this procedure the other day and it put a little lock sign on my access to the internet. I guess that meant I was blocking out PPPoE and connecting through the router. Should I then have gone to the router and set that up? I know the address is 192.168.0.1. Please let me know if I'm on the right track. Kinda feel like I'm in deep water.

I'll admit I'm not familiar with earth link and their policy regarding home networks. If they have it locked or need to change it on their end then you're stuck and have to call them. Ask them to put it in MODEM ONLY mode, Then you should be able to add your router. Maybe some other forum users can explain it better. Good Luck!
  • Best way to test the bridge mode with PPPoE is utilize the URL and put in the bridge mode.

After the unit in bridge mode , connect your PC to the Zyxel 660R and check the ip from command line (CMD , ipconfig)

If ip shoes 169.x then Zyxel 660R is properly in bridge mode.

Next is to use XP PPP Dial up

If you can connect and surf the internet it should work. If this does not work you will need to call your ISP and work with this setup.

Once this works , THEN you can install your router and provide user/pass under basic setting of the router settings and should work
  • Are you saying I have to go the Modem url and change the mode to bridge instead of routing and if so do I have to change the other options: encapsulation - multiplex or virtual circuit IP

Also when I'm done with the modem and set up the network do I change TCP/IP only when I get to the router?
  • Yes. you log in and change to bridge mode. Rest of setting does not be changes in the broadband modem. just bridge mode

NO.. you have to use PPPoE account under basic settings of the router GUI
  • In bridge mode these options automatically come up under Encapsulation: RFC1483 and PPPoA. Which should I chose and why? I've also noticed since I've set up a network (gold lock icon by connections) I can no longer use my regular connections (LAN) to get to the internet. Have to use dial up and change TCP/IP and DNS settings to connect. Is this normal? I don't like dial up - too slow.
  • If EarthLink uses pppoa you will not able to use bridge mode

RFC is what you want and as long earthlink uses PPOE the. You should test with PC make sure it works
  • Using PPP dial up it test make site bridge works

It is NOT same as dial up in 56K while connected to DSL in bridge mode

You can do Speedtest yours led and you will see that
