Looks like problem fixed. Following advice seen here and elsewhere, I upped the IP lease time on the router from default 1 hour to a couple of days. No real idea why this works but no crashes for 3 days now.

Lots of calls to cable company (ISP) and extender manufacturer accomplished nothing. So I tried something from a Google search and the problem has gone away so far (12 hours and counting).
I set the extender to static IP and set IP to 192.168.0.10. I think this may have been the default.
Then went to router and saw it was set to generate IPs of 192.168.0.1 to 192.168.0.254 (I think). I changed the lower bound to 192.168.0.11 so that it would not overlap with the extender.
So far so good, but honestly not sure whether I made a difference, or whether fix will last.

Nope. Cable box went back out after 19 hours. A new record, but still out.
