Will a 5 Ghz signal get extended by a 2.4 Ghz source?

I have a Netgear DSL router that doesn't have the signal strength to cover my house.  I bought a Netgear range extender WN2500RP.  The ideal location for the extender doesn't have an electrical plug so I have to place it a bit further out, talking about 15 feet.  I still have real good 2.4 Ghz coverage which the extender picks up and amplifies nicely.  I do not see a 5 Ghz signal from the DSL router, but the extender shows a strong signal. The laptop I'm using is connected to that 5 Ghz signal so it is giving internet service.

Is the Network extender simply using the source 2.4 Ghz signal from the router and using it for the 5 Ghz one?  Somehow converting the frequency internally or just labeling the 2.4 Ghz signal from the DSL router to 5 Ghz in the extender due to the absence of a 5 Ghz source from the DSL router.

  • The extender is taking the data received from the router in the 2.4 GHz frequency band and retransmitting it on the 5 GHz band.
