Wireless password but no lock symbol?

I basically changed my wireless password by changing it to WPA2 from WEP/WPA. Yet, before that I had reset the factory settings (which didn't work because I could still use the original information I thought I lost but found). For my phone, I have to use a password but on my laptop I have to go to properties and put on the passcode but I don't see a lock symbol. Also, under active networks, when connected it says: 'Public Network.' I AM WORRIED AND CONFUSED. What do I do?

    I would start from scratch.

Press and hold reset until power led flashes, then use default credentials to access router setup and change SSID, enter a Passphrase after checking to be sure you select security setting which all your clients can use.

The public network is default WINDOWS FIREWALL settings when it detects a new connection, just change it to home in windows.
