WN3000RP internet access - some work some dont

Hello, hope someone can help.

I have a standalone cable modem for my internet, which links into my main router (Netgear N750). I needed to extend the wifi of that device so I bought a WN3000RP "Universal WiFi Range Extender".

Situation:

> Setup worked fine, no problems at all. The base network is SSID='NIGHTMARE5' and the extended network 'NIGHTMARE5_EXT'. Note I kept basic settings for the IP on the LAN, so the extender gets its IP address from the router's DHCP, configures itself with the router address (192.168.0.1) as the default gateway, and also - perhaps here's the issue - configures it's DNS to also be the gateway address and NOT the external DNS server addresses which the router has

> I can see in the attached devices that the extender has correctly received an IP address from the DHCP on the router (192.168.0.14)

> Connected to the LAN by wire I can login to the WN3000 whose status shows all is well (connected to existing network at 54MBit/s, extender wireless on ch.11 at up to 54MBit/s)

> My home printer is connected via a wireless access point which uses the extender network (_EXT). The printer works fine.

Now the strange part. Some devices work fine, some don't; the Netgear WGPS606 (wireless printer server) works fine, my BlackBerry will happily connect to the _EXT network, and my wife's Macbook Pro will also connect to the _EXT network and she can access the internet in full.

...HOWEVER...

I have two Windows 7 laptops and these do not work at all. They can 'see' the _EXT network no problem, and to be sure I tested sitting 5 metres from the extender box so I have five bars of signal. But in the case of BOTH machines, when you connect to 'NIGHTMARE5_EXT', the same thing happens:
i. Connection appears to take unusually long
ii. The wifi icon in the taskbar shows the exclamation mark
iii. 'Internet Access' is never granted
iv. Eventually the Windows 7 networking defaults to "I can't find the internet" mode and allocates a special IP address of it's own (so I cannot even access the LAN).

This behaviour is consistent, both across the two machines (one is W7 32bit home premium, the other is W7 64bit ultimate) and across multiple attempts.

Any ideas? It's driving me nuts!!

Thanks

Alastair

if you have N router with extender it should have better than 54Mbps but that is not an issues

These don't have firewall on devices that will cause issues or less to bring an issues

if can not find internet connection then provide public ISP DNS server ip on wind7 tcp/ip properties setting and see how it goes
  • Similar problems discovered.
WN3000RP orks sometimes good, then poor!

Configuring initial konf with a smartfone works fine!
Configuring with Notebook ACER with Win7, no chance!!

    I measure speed with a N Router:
Direct connection with ACER Notebook (no extender) same location:
    Down: 10MB, UP : 1.3MB answeringtime 26ms. thats OK
Connecting the Ethernet Port of Repeater, same speed.
Conneting now with XXX-EXT speed drops dramatically to:
    Down: 500kB Up:55kB time: 27ms
No same with my GarminAsus Smartfone Android:
    IMPORTANT same position!!!!
    Connected with xxx-EXT very fast
Down: 10,5 MB UP: 1.3 MB Time:25 ms!!!!!!!
Any explanation why can the littel machine have the super speed and the ACER Notebook with Win7 only 500kb!!!!!! via EXT!!!!! direct no problem!!!!!starnge.

Experimented with older W-Lan router Dlink DI-614Plus.
    11MB Speed, WEP 128bit

NO WAY TO GET A WORKING EXT..... it shows up, bat NO CONNECTION!!!

    Any ideas friends?
  • you should be using WPA2 encryption on main wireless router and join the extender with WPA2.

If the Router supports it, bit the D-Link 614plus has not.!
My Router with N Standard and WPA2 is working, but how do you explain the speeddifference betwenn the ACER Notebook (wich works excellent with other W-Lans) and the Smartphone?
Acer NB only 300kb, the smartphone up to 10 MB!!!
