WN604 with WNR2000 trouble

HELP! Bet you guys hear that a lot around here. :-)

I've run out of ideas trying to get a WAP to work with our new wnr2000 router. I've been around computers most of my life (owned a computer store back in the 90's), but am a newbie to the finer points of wireless networking. At any rate, first the old configuration (which worked like a charm and was set up by someone else):

A Panasonic Workio 3630 copier/printer connected via an internal ethernet card to a Linksys WAP54G WAP, which then broadcast to a Linksys WRT54G wireless-G router (using WEP). The result was that anyone could print over the wireless network to the copier/printer. (with the WAP basically functioning like a print server)

Upgraded to the Netgear wnr2000 to get -N speed and WPA2 encryption plus parental controls; Linksys WAP wouldn't connect. Struggled for a day with settings, finally decided to try a Netgear WAP. Got the WN604 and have tried to make connection; the only way it shows up on the WNR2000 attached devices list is if I put the WN604 in client mode--then the WNR2000 sees the MAC address of the WN604, but not the device name or the ip address. Am running in WPA2 mode.

Are these two devices compatible, and can the WN604 do what the Linksys WAP was doing on the old setup? What am I missing here (besides experience)? Do I need to use WEP instead? Is the client mode the one I want to use with the WN604 to make the connection? (Can't get it to be sensed by the router in any other mode.)

Glad to give more details if needed, but does anyone have an idea what the problem might be?

Thanks!
Kevin

  • Solved the problem. Got the WAP talking to the router w/ DHCP rather than static addresses, then had to reconfigure some "secret menu" stuff on the printer (complements of my local copier company technician).

For the record, never did get the old Linksys WAP to play nice with the WNR2000, but the WN604 finally did. Wow, what a learning curve over the past two days!
  • some old G adapter will not 100% compatible with N router even N router is backward compatible

also on legacy G , router may need to use 54Mbps setting instead of N mode which defeats of buying n router if are in mix mode with G card, N card adapters.
