Netgear routers make poor repeaters. They use a crippled version of an old repeater protocol called WDS. I would not bother trying to set it up unless you want an insecure network. Besides, both ends of the Wi-Fi connection need to run WDS in order to work.
You can set up the router as an Access Point. This requires, however, a wired connection back to the main router. You can use Ethernet, Powerline or coax. If this is not practical then you'll have to buy a new range extender.
