A VPN I am thinking of getting, states that if I need help connecting the VPN to my router, WNDR3700

My router is MODEL - WNDR3700V3 N600 WIRELESS DUAL BAND GIGABIT ROUTER, and I am stuck. Looking to sign on with PURE VPN, which is my first experience with VPN, when I find I am stuck, due to the fact that Netgear and one other manufactured router, have no written info to help someone connect VPN to it. Some 10 other brands do have the info, but not Netgear. Before starting something I can't complete, I have asked Pure VPN Tech about this issue, and they state to start installing the VPN program, and IF I run into trouble connecting to my router, get in touch with them, and provide my WAN SETTINGS, so they can determine the right way to advise me on. Logging into the Netgear Genie settings, both using Chrome and Firefox, and the router is on V1.0.0.38_1.0.31, NO WHERE do I see the word WAN, and if I can't understand how to find it, HOW DO I GET THE SETTINGS? In my mid 60's, I've learned before trying something out for the first time, find answers to questions you might have, to keep from running into a road block. I may be the ONLY computer user asking this, but WHERE DO I FIND MY WAN SETTINGS? Thanks.

  • When you install the VPN client application on your computer there really isn't anything you should have to do in your router and the PureVPN app should automatically configure everything during installation.  However, depending on your router's menu options you should be able to find your WAN settings either under "Internet" or "Basic Settings".  You are looking for the option that shows your Internet IP address and DNS address.  The Advanced settings section should also have additional WAN settings available.

When router manufacturers include VPN instructions they are usually talking about using the router as a VPN server.  This allows you secure access to your home network from a remote location.  While it is possible for your router to function as a VPN client, it requires third-party firmware to be installed on the router.  I would only recommend this for advanced users.  Stick with running the VPN client on your computer for starters.  Note that PureVPN offers a 7-day money back guarantee so you can try it risk free (I don't use PureVPN, I just saw that they offer a money back guarantee on their website)..

Morning to you, cancon1. Thank you a bunch for the reply, and doing so in a manner I can understand what you speak of. I'm not a expert on how a lot of things are stated as, especially online. All too often, I wonder if it would have paid me if I had gotten some electronic background, to better make it possible to actually know what it means when I read something.

Contacting Pure VPN, before I jump in, was an effort to try and get answers, since VPN is brand new to me. To me it seems the main reason they are saying to connect directly to the router, is because I am a Cord Cutter, for some 8 years now. Besides rabbit ears for local news, I mainly use a Roku 3 and also a Chromecast dongle I cast videos or whatever, to it from my pc. So, there is very little, I miss out on. It's the Roku 3 they mentioned, that they want tied in their VPN service, and as you said, it's probably not hard, getting VPN service, directly to the router. I had seen the Free Trial offer, and they have a Router Download to go with the one for Windows. But I suppose I'm the type who once he gets into something, just won't let go of it.

It's frustrating I'll admit, with my lack of KNOW HOW with a VPN service, to know what are the best ones to choose from. Being I know some of the things I'd need before hand, like the Roku 3 and VOIP service, it would help if they had a 20 BEST VPN list, that doesn't limit the VPN on one issue, but as them being a complete VPN, Specializing in such and such, but also not Offering such and such, to know which one’s to choose from. I have fiber for my internet connection, and have a Home phone, with them as well. I have been knowing about VOIP for over a decade, and I'd love to drop my phone service I have to pay for, and use VOIP. If you ever heard about OBIHAI, I bought one of their devices, an OBI202 WITH two Phone plugins, one for your phone, the other for your fax if you’d like, and it works really good. But that's just the first part, I need to connect to Google Voice, which I've had over a decade, and see if it works as a provider or not. But again, so little instruction, it’s so very possible to mess it up. I've been distracted with other things lately, so I've yet to try that connection, because I just have to a clear mind, as I try and connect the two together. I don't think Pure VPN offers VOIP service, some others I have looked at do, but again, just what is right for me?

Again, I thank you for your reply, and the fact you wrote it in a manner I can understand. That, means a lot to me. God Bless.
