Access point N150 WN604

I have this access point hard wired to my desktop PC router. My wife has a new windows 11 laptop which connects to this access point in another room. She is concerned about security and I have no idea if this is secure. The access point is set up as default SSID, Open System. She has been using this access point for many years with no problems, should I make changes to the configuration, and if so, to what? Or should I leave as current and stop being concerned? We both have security software installed on our PC/Laptops.

  • The WN604 is an ancient (2010) device. It is many generations behind the latest on the wifi front and it has local wired speeds that operate at 100 Mbps on local wired devices, a tenth the speed of more recent access points and slower than many internet services. On security, it hasn't received an update since 2018.

A Windows 11 laptop will have much more modern wifi, at least 5 GHz and maybe even 6GHz and probably faster ethernet.

Your local security probably depends more on the rest of your network, the modem and/or router that connects the WN604 to the Internet. If it is of the same vintage, you might like to check that. It could be time to think of something new.

If you update the stuff in front of the access point, you may not even need it.
