Netgear routers can't operate as wireless expanders - neither in a bridge mode with a dedicated uplink nor as a expander with both radio interfaces.

One follow up question: I have a spare Apple Airport Express at home, can I make this unit work as an extender for Netgears routers instead of my old router?

As above - the AE can either act as a NAT router, or configured as a wireless access point (LAN connected) only.
