External USB storage not working on R7800

I have had constant issues with getting USB storage to work on my R7800 Nighthawk. I was able to access it for a while through the windows file explorer by typing in the IP address but my computer took a crap so I am using mobile only until I can get it replaced and would like to be able to upload files to my drives.

I'll start off with hardware/firmware specifics.

R7800 firmware:  V1.0.2.78

HDD 1: 2 TB Seagate Photo Drive SRD0NF1

HDD 2: 1 TB WD My Passport WDBYVG0010BBK-0B

The Seagate drive is listed in compatibility list, the WD is not but is a similar model to others listed and should work, both drives have the same issue.

My problem is with using both drives as either a normal network storage device or with the ReadyCloud. I am not able to upload via either option. I can see both drives in both network storage and on ReadyCloud and I am able to download files that are already stored on the hdd's from both. If I attempt to upload via the files app by copying files to the drive I get the error "Unknown error: STATUS_OTHER (0xc0000008): Write failed for SMB2FileId{persistentHandle= bf 78 4e 7a 00 00 00 00}". When attempting to share to ready cloud through the files app I get the error :Invalid Credentials Or Service Is Unavailable" when I open the folder that I am trying to upload to. If I attempt to upload to the drive without going into a folder I get the error  "ReadyCLOUD keeps stopping" and it closes the app. I attempted to upload a file from my work computer via ReadyCloud and received the error "Failed to upload 'ENTH.jpg' to '\\R7800\tmp\mnt\sda1\Christmas Movies'".

I spent hours on the phone with tech support resetting my router, reverting to an older firmware, re-updating to current firmware, changing settings, etc etc etc. I was supposed to receive a call back the next day from a Senior Tech which never happened, instead I received an email stating my problem had been marked as resolved. I had found the option to access via windows file explorer by then so I just didn't bother trying to contact them again but now I no longer have that as an option.

I'm not sure what else I could possibly do to fix the issue. In the router settings both drives show up, they're both approved, they're both linked to ReadyCloud. If anybody has any idea please let me know, if any more specifics are needed I will be happy to provide them. I bought this specific router because of the dual USB ports and not being able to use them is extremely disappointing.

  • I'm having similar issues. Up unitl few months back, I was able to use both USB ports (1TB WD drive and 2TB WD drive). After a certain FW update, I do not recall which version ,USB ports no longer work.

I've done factory reset as well as updated to latest FW(*.78 version) but no luck so I've asked netgear support to issue RMA. I've spent multiple hours chasing down tech support agents. L1 agents are useless IMO.

someone really messed up in FW update !!
