Half Speed When Using Keyword Blocking
My download speed has been cut in half. After much ado, I realized that this speed decrease is being caused by blocking a couple domains using the "Block Sites" screen. Is this just the nature o...

Now I'm using openDNS and I add a blocked domains to blacklist. Router works with full speed. You should consider that config.

WNR3500L - I don't see any mention of version on it.
Yes - all was fine until I used the domain blocking feature for the first time a couple days ago. I checked all connections, rebooted everything a few times and ended up chatting with ISP and they re-provisioned and "optimized" my settings and nothing changed. Then I tested with my PC connected straight to modem and all was fine. So that sent me to the router as the problem and it immeditely dawned on me that I had enabled the site blocking shortly before I noticed the speed drop. I disabled the site blocking and all was fine again. It is reproducable every time. Speed test sites are not affected, but download a file from any site and my speed drops from my normal 31.x MB/sec to 15.x MB/sec.
Router firmware checks says it has the latest firmware (V1.2.2.48_35.0.55NA).

Can you try to reinstall the firmware of the router then do a factory reset after?

the same problem

Thanks for that link zakk87. Still not sure if this is the hardware being bogged down by the extra load of filtering or if it is a software bug though.
If it is software, I wonder if using non Netgear firmware like DD-WRT, OpenWRT or Tomato might cure the problem. Not familiar with your router model but don't expect Netgear to release any new firmware for my antique.
If anyone stumbles across this thread and is in the know ... please do share your knowledge :)

Features that require deep packet inspection often force hardware acceleration to be disabled, though I don't know whether losing half of the speed is normal on the WNR3500L. On a R7000, top speeds drop from 1 Gbps to about 450 Mbps.
You are certainly welcome to try DD-WRT, OpenWRT or Tomato. I'm gonna bet that they won't help. DD-WRT doesn't even support hardware acceleration.
Keyword blocking doesn't work with https connections, so it's really not that useful. Take that into consideration before you expend any more effort.
