Half Speed When Using Keyword Blocking
My download speed has been cut in half. After much ado, I realized that this speed decrease is being caused by blocking a couple domains using the "Block Sites" screen. Is this just the nature o...

Now I'm using openDNS and I add a blocked domains to blacklist. Router works with full speed. You should consider that config.

Thanks for that link zakk87. Still not sure if this is the hardware being bogged down by the extra load of filtering or if it is a software bug though.
If it is software, I wonder if using non Netgear firmware like DD-WRT, OpenWRT or Tomato might cure the problem. Not familiar with your router model but don't expect Netgear to release any new firmware for my antique.
If anyone stumbles across this thread and is in the know ... please do share your knowledge :)

Features that require deep packet inspection often force hardware acceleration to be disabled, though I don't know whether losing half of the speed is normal on the WNR3500L. On a R7000, top speeds drop from 1 Gbps to about 450 Mbps.
You are certainly welcome to try DD-WRT, OpenWRT or Tomato. I'm gonna bet that they won't help. DD-WRT doesn't even support hardware acceleration.
Keyword blocking doesn't work with https connections, so it's really not that useful. Take that into consideration before you expend any more effort.

Thanks for that info TheEther.
I am just going to live with it as is. I am only blocking the domain that my iPhone uses to download iOS updates. It only downloads them when on charger and connected to wifi. If it doesn't download the update, it doesn't constantly nag me to install it.
I just set my filtering on a schedule so it is on when I charge my phone but off when I normally do my downloading.
When I get a new phone, or when Apple releases an iOS version that doesn't break my touch ID, I will be done with filtering anyway.
