How to update firmware

Netgear AC1200 Model R6120

Trying to update firmware on a Mac WITHOUT USING A PHONE APP.

Can download the file

R6120-V1.0.0.46.img

Can't get any farther.

The file doesn't open when double clicked. The Notes the come with it are just a link to download the same file again. None of the instructions I've found elsewhere on the Netgear site seem to be of any use. The NETGEAR USB Control center just gives an empty greyed out window and a popup that says

"Installation is incomplete! Please install again" (which it has been saying since initial set-up).

Anyone have a link to working instructions or any hints on what to do?

That's not how it's done.  Normally, at this point, I'd suggest
reading the Release Notes file for instructions, but...

Those Release Notes are worse than usual (and usual is none too
good).  Typically, the Release Notes file will include actual
    instructions.

Visit http://netgear.com/support , put in your model number, and look
for Documentation.  Get the User Manual.  Look for "Update the Firmware
of the Router" and "Manually Upload New Firmware and Update the Router".

Ignore the part about ".chk", and pretend that it said ".img".  (The
    hits just keep on coming...)

The non-psychics in your audience may have little idea of where you
might have looked, or what you might have found there.
