Is my old WNDR 4500 slowing me down?

I have a high speed fibre optic connection in Japan with a max speed of 1Gbps. On either the 2GHz or 5GHz band, with or without connecting via NordVPN, my D/L speed tests return anywhere from 15Mbps to 50Mbps and my U/L speeds are usually around 100Mbps. My PC is very new and when connected at work I get 140Mbps D/L.

Is my old WNDR 4500 probably the cause of my substandard speed at home? I'm probably going to get a new router soon anyway, but in the meantime is there anything I can do to speed things up?

Thanks for your help,

J

  • Factory reset the router and during the install, make sure to leave any additional settings such as qos, access control, traffic monitoring, parental controls, etc all disabled.

OK so after the factory reset, the 2GHz band is around 30-40mbps and the 5GHz band is getting just of 100mbps. Are these the kinds of speeds I should expect from this router? Given that I have a 1Gps connection would a newer, faster router likely result in faster speeds? Thanks again.
