Is there a way to update R6400 firmware from a USB flash drive?

Presently running version V1.0.1.6_1.0.4.   (ancient)

I want to update the firmware but I am a newb to this router's config SW.

My configuration is:

Verizon FIOS G1100 is my connection to the internet.

My R6400 WAN port is connected to a G1100 LAN port (crossover cable).

I left the R6400 in the router mode (not Wireless AP and not bridge).

Internet works great on devices attached to either the G1100 or R6400.

With the R6400 NOT connected to the G1100, I Wi-Fi connected a PC to the R6400 by accessing http://www.routerlogin.com.  I could access the R6400 config software.

But, after I connected the R6400 to the G1100, two things happened:

1: I can access the internet on my PC connected to the R6400

2: I can no longer access the R6400 config software:

I tried to access the R6400 config software two different ways:

1: If I attempt to access R6400 via http://www.routerlogin.com the R6400 apparently forwards the request to the G1100 and I end up with the internet provided error screen that I'm not connnected to the R6400.

2: If I attempt to access R6400 at 192.168.1.1, the R6400 apparently forwards the request and I end up with the G1100's configuration software login screen.

So I can not access the R6400 when I am attached to the internet via the G1100 so I can not initiate a firmware update on the R6400 via internet. I could live with that if I could just update to the latest firmware in order to have the security fixes.

I have downloaded the latest firmware file R6400-V1.0.1.62_1.0.41.chk from Netgear.   Is there a way to install the firmware using a USB flash drive?

No.  (Not, so far as I know, with Netgear firmware.  But you don't
    care.)

No one cares any more.  Modern hardware adapts automatically.

Are you sure?  WAP mode might make more sense.

Are the IP addresses of client devices in the same subnet, no matter
to which router you connect them?   (That would suggest R6400-as-WAP.)

If you connect the R6400 (WAN/Internet interface) to some other
router, it might notice that, and decide to help you out by adopting a
wireless-access-point configuration without your having asked
    explicitly.

Seeing some actual IP addresses would clarify that.

The simple solution for a firmware update in that case would be to
download the firmware kit onto some computer or other, connect that
computer to the loose R6400, and load the firmware manually from that
computer onto the R6400.  You don't need an Internet connection to allow
a computer to talk to a loose R6400.

What's the actual message text?  That's the typical result if your
DNS work is being done by a non-Netgear router.  (For example, if your
R6400 were configured as a WAP.)

That just says that your G1100 is at "192.168.1.1", it says little
about the R6400, except that it probably isn't.

       No, but...

Visit http://netgear.com/support , put in your model number, and look
for Downloads.  (For older versions, under Firmware and Software
Downloads, look for "View Previous Versions".)  Find the kit(s).
Download the kit(s) you want.  Read the "Release Notes" file for
instructions.  (In the User Manual, look for "firmware", and,
especially, for a topic like "Manually Upload Firmware to the Router".)
When that fails because of a deficient User Manual, try:

          https://kb.netgear.com/23960
          https://kb.netgear.com/31573

You might also check the G1100 to see if it shows the R6400 as a DHCP
client, or what Netgear would call an "Attached Device".  That should
reveal the LAN IP address of the R6400-as-WAP (if it is actually
configured that way -- which it probably should be).
