Netgear N600 (WNDR3400v2)

I have a Netgear N600 Dual Band Wireless Router and it has done great for me throughout the years.  We recently have other house guests so the number of devices has increased.  Which the network has been handling great.  I got a Netgear AC1750 Mesh Extender to help because the wifi gets a little weak in the basement and the router is positioned in the upstairs back room.  The problem I've been having is that when I try to log in to my router I can get in a first time.  I can click between the tabs and view my sub menus. I've been trying to organize/structure my network, but after a short period of time if I try to click between the different tabs I get a page in the middle of the window with a dog eared corner and a sad face.  And the router will not let me log back in. I try to use NetGenie and it says Router is not found or supported, unless I restart the router.  If I restart the router then I can log in like normal and everything is seen for however long and then the same thing occurs.  I tried checking for a firmware update and the router just says "Connecting to Netgear Server......".  So I'm not experiencing any internet drop outs and everything appears to be fine, but I am wondering if I should just update my router to say a Netgear Nighthawk AX2400 or similar?  I have not been successful as far finding what might be causing this to happen outside of the fact that the router is about 11 years in totality and I've had mine for maybe about 7 of those 11 years.

Short summary of devices connected to the router:

  • My PC (wired) (AMD Ryzen 5 5600X,
  • My wife's work station (wired)
  • FireTV Cube (wired)
  • 3 Firesticks
  • Insignia Smart TV
  • 3 Tablets
  • 2 iPhone 13s
  • Galaxy S20
  • Dell Inspiron Laptop
  • HP Work Laptop (I know not very descriptive but it belongs to my house guest so I'm not sure the model, but it is a newer one)
  • Dell Work Laptop
  • The mesh extender might help out nicely in areas thats struggling to reach.

sometimes its worth trying both to see how performance and coverage are. Especially if you already have the extender.

I'd take a look on amazon for "netgear renewed".

they've had some pretty good sales on renewed routers.

I've seen the AX5400 for super cheap on there and its a pretty solid performing router.

  • I'd actually be looking at upgrading it. The wndr3400 wasn't a gigabit class device and only fast ethernet capable. Meaning its ethernet ports are only 10/100mbps and not 1000mbps. They're going to bottleneck your network. And its wireless wasn't that fast either.

So my next question, the newer router I mentioned going to the Nighthawk AX2400, says it can do up to about 2000 sq ft. Which does cover my home. But with going through the walls, floors, etc do you think the router would be fine on its own or would the Mesh Extender be alright just to help out?

      Also, thanks for the response
