Orbi RBR20 Wireless devices connected to 5GHz but only downloading at 400Mbps max

I have an Orbi RBR20 router and satellite with a 750Mbps down 200Mbps up connection speed. I had my desktop PC connected to the router directly through ethernet and my download speeds did reach 750 Mbps on the desktop.

I have recently had to change my desktop's location. I've had to resort to moving the satellite to the same room as the PC (connected via ethernet). I have tested downloading a game on Steam, and the max I got was 50MB/s (400 Mbps). Even using a new Macbook Pro with it right next to the router, I could not download anything faster that 400Mbps,

Every time a device tells me that it is connected to my network on 802.11ac, I cannot have it reach the 750 Mbps download speed I expect. Is there any way I can have it download faster than 400Mbps when connected to 5 GHz?

  • The RBR20 uses a 866mbps backhaul connection. and thats link speed, not throughput speed. throughput is usually 55-65% (roughly) of what link speed is. And thats again, the highest link speed you can have. distance and obstacles are going to drop that backhaul connection.

Hitting 400mbps over wireless from a satellite is about peak you can expect. The only way to get faster? A hardwired connection back to the primary router.

Potentially upgrading to a RBK50 system with the 1733mbps backhaul might help.
