Parental Controls and Google Chrome

Parental controls setup on Nighthawk router all working fine until now. It seems my Android tablets in Chrome aren't being controlled by the Parental controls or OpenDNS.

I've checked all the settings and wondered if others have this problem and a solution?

  • Have you changed the DNS servers on your internet connection of the tablet itself, instead of letting it use the DNS servers in your router?

  • Thanks clothes, I've tried but the nexus 7 won't let me change the DNS settings. Surely I shouldn't need to make it a static IP?

How can it not let you change it? Consider your Nexus just like any other computers where you can manipulate its settings. Unless it's password protected and you do not have the key.

Actually he might need to set a static address to over-ride the DHCP DNS settings.  But it shouldn't be necessary.

Is the nexus possibly reaching the blocked sites over cellular?

  • Evening,

So managed to set my nexus to a static IP address and added the Opendns servers to it. However both Chrome and Firefox are not blocking. I changed the netgear genie for my iPhone to high level and it blocked all the sites it should.

Not sure why just the nexus is not going through opendns.

Are the only DNS servers the openDNS ones?

  • So the DNS servers are only the OpenDNS ones. They are both the same on the nexus and on the router. Even when I go to www.opendns.com/welcome does it tell its not working. Strangely my iOS devices are being blocked as expected.
  • Fixed it! Disabled IPv6 on the router. All working as it should.

So parental controls are bypassed if you use IPv6?  Regrettable, and rather odd, since DNS is needed with IPv6 also.
