R6220 unable to configure connected devices
Hi
I'm new to this forum, I have a question regarding R6220, I hope this is still a valid product to ask about (or if not I'd like to know what is the current recommended model)
My question, or problem, is that for some time now I have been unable to access the device connection settings. Previously I was able to set up whether default mode was to allow or disallow new devices from connecting, plus give connected devices a name so I could keep track of them better.
For some time now, the allow/disallow option does not work, and there is no longer any way to name the devices.
I'm not sure whether this is caused by a firmware update to the router, or an update of the browser? When I try to run for example Chrome in debug mode the brower till tell me scripts are blocked, but this is not my choice so I am assuming this is some new default behavior in Chromium, (since I get the same in MS Edge as well).
Error: Refused to execute script from 'http://www.routerlogin.com/assets/js/mdetect.js' because its MIME type ('text/html') is not executable, and strict MIME type checking is enabled
(Using the IP adress for the router instead gives the same result)
I have also tried to connect through the Nighthawk app, and connecting to the router works fine, but I can't edit the device names there either, so they all just show up as "unknown" just like in the webbbrowser, except for the ones I named before it stopped working.
The R6220 is on the latest firmware according to when I check for updates, V1.1.0.114_1.0.1
Is naming of devices and configuring default access mode no longer supported or supposed to work, or am I doing something wrong?
Kind regards
Mike

And thirdly, what I'm primarily trying to do is to name the devices, as over the time the family gets new devices, and I'd like to name them to know who they are, since there's also accidental attempts to connect from neighbours, which I'd like to prevent.
The appearance of the GUI in Netgear's Nighthawk app depends on the firmware. Older devices won't look quite the same as new stuff. Here is what I see in the MR90.
- Basic
- Attached Devices
- Click device
- Edit Device
You should see something similar. That is certainly the pattern in my old R7800.
If you are using Windows, the old Netgear Genie lets you rename devices.

Netgear wants to kill it – which is why it is hidden away on the support pages – but some of us diehards like it. This has a Network Map
Click a device and then Modify.

If there is one it might help if you told people the make and model number of the modem/gateway/ONT that sits between this router and the Internet. Is it, by any chance, also a router, with a set of LAN ports on the back?
I ask because a lot of people turn up here trying to put a router behind a modem that is also a router. That can complicate troubleshooting.- bergatagenAspirant
Hello and thanks for the reply.
I am not sure how this would help, since I am accessing my router directly through a wired (LAN) connection via http, so I believe that whatever connectivity my router has between it and some other services would not be relevant?
But to try to answer the question anyway, I'm connected to the city local network (for households), so it's not a modem or dialup but a fibre-connection, it has higher speeds but to me it is presented as a 500 Mbps LAN, but yes there is an external/extra "box" (I'm actually not sure whether a switch or a router), which connects to the central switch for the whole neighborhood. These "boxes" are not accessible to me since they're provided by the internet service provider but they've been in place for some 10'ish years. (I'm assuming they of course also upgrade their firmware and such stuff, but that would apply to any device on the internet, and again, those boxes are not placed between my computer/webbrowser and my router and it's admin web interface).
So it's more like this
My PC --> LAN/wired connection --> My router --> LAN/wired connection --> ISP
Best regards
Mike

I asked the question because it is extremely relevant. Without an answer, no one can help you much.
Troubleshooting is a case of ruling out the obvious suspects, the "two router" gotcha, and moving on to the next possibility.

This information, missing from your first message, lands us in unfamiliar territory for most problems with routers. These usually connect with a modem or a "gateway", a box that is both router and modem.
Your setup, similar to what you will see on many "campus" sites, means that we don't now where to look for the router bit of your network.
That you are not sure if this is a switch or a router is where the problem begins. If it is a router, then you are adding a router to a router. That is a bad idea.
What is Double NAT? | Answer | NETGEAR SupportHave you asked your ISP what you should do to add another router to its network?
Have you tried using the R6220 in access point (AP) mode? That disables the router bit of the R6220.
As I said, you do not have a typical network topology that is easy to diagnose.
There are other issues in your first message. My first response was an attempt to rule out one of the most obvious sources of problems.
You later asked:
Is naming of devices and configuring default access mode no longer supported or supposed to work, or am I doing something wrong?
The answer to the first bit is no. You should still be able to name devices and manage access, if that's what you mean.
You may not be doing anything wrong. But it depends on the front end of your network and how you connect to the internet.
