r6220 USB TLS access
All I am trying to find out is if there is a way to access storage connected to the USB port on the R6220 router. Currently it is using TLS V1 and searching this forum I can't find any reference to the RS6220 and the ability to upgrade that protocol. I understand it is an old modem, and if upgrading is required so be it.

Yes. Plug it in and set it up as described in the manual.

What makes you ask? You have a problem of some sort?

What's TLS V1?
If you are using Windows and you have access problems, SMB is the thing to look out for.

The R6220 isn't a modem. It is a router.
Maybe you have a modem/router sitting between the R6220 and the Internet.

O.K. so it is a router.. My bad. Connecting a USB drive to the USB port is straight forward.... Now have you ever tried to have someone external to you home network, HTTPS to your external network, on port 443 (or any other port you select in the USB config)? They will get an error complaining that the the browser doesn't support the protocol. That protocol is TLS, Transportation Layer Security. V1 is not supported and that is what the R6220 uses.
I was going to use this drive to send and receive files from one of my children out of state.

Not just a router but one of Netgear's older (2016) and least capable routers.
What you want to achieve used to be dead easy. Then Netgear killed ReadyCLOUD, which was there to do just what you want.
You could investigate the use of OpenVPN access to your network.

Search the manual for OpenVPN.But that can be a bit fiddly to set up.
