R6230 Is Constantly Losing Internet Connection, but That's Not All
For the past several weeks I have been experiencing internet drops from my router. Initially it was for very brief periods, Then stretched to hours, now it could be days. Trying to reset, I find that it is not keeping my password correct and each time I tried to go online to follow instructions, it would not recognize passwords, (not even it's own), telling me that they did not match what was on file. I set up security questions and was told that they were wrong. I'd used my mothers middle name and the first school I attended, but according to the nighthawk, I don't know either of them. I don't know my mother's name or my first school. This was put in today and just a few hours later, it's wrong?? C'mon guys. For weeks I thought that the issue was me, but it's not. I'd dutifully write down the password I would use so that I was making sure that they would match, but every time, they did not.
I decided to do a factory reset but again it will not accept my passwords or security question. Admittedly, I'm no tech person, but I'm not stupid either. I can follow simple directions and can do some problem solving without bringing down the house. So now I am stuck. I'm not allowed to do a factory reset, which I need in order to begin again at the beginning, nor can I continue were I am.
I need this issue resolved because my medical monitoring is connected to the internet an my life is literally in these guys hands and they are fumbling the ball, and seem to not care. I MUST reset this router. So my question is; when all else fail, How Do I Reset? Please excuse the capitals, but I am so upset that I really want to curse, but as far as I can see you guys are actually trying to help us, but you have to understand, that I COULD DIE from this. The company has it's 30 pieces of silver, so they have no interest any longer, except to suggest that I upgrade. I don't know anyone else financial situation, but I am a disabled veteran and senior citizen on a fixed, very limited income, so just throwing money at the problem is not an option for me.
My service provider has run checks on the line up to my wall. They can see what computer I have connected, but you know that is as far as they will go. That's what I am up against. So please help me resolve this issue as swift as possible as my quality of life is diminishing as we speak. I have no files to attach or anything. So if someone can please just tell me how to get around this reset issue I can, at least trick my mind into thinking that I am moving forward and perhaps relieve some of this anxiety that is building, exacerbating my physical, mental and emotional breakdown.
I will answer replies with questions to the fullest. Again, I am not technical but if the directions are basic enough I am sure to be able to follow them.
Thank you for listening.

After you reset the R6230 you wipe out the answers to the security questions. You have to set the thing up from scratch.
If you are trying to use the "password recovery" option, there is a bug in Netgear's implementation of password recovery on some devices. You can get locked into a closed loop.
If password recovery is enabled, but you have not set the answers to the questions, it keeps sending you back to the beginning of the process. If you haven't already given the thing your personal answers, they are not in its memory and it has no way of knowing if they are correct. The first thing I do after a setup a router is to disable the "password reset" option so that I do not get that hassle. (I also ensure that I remember the password I created for "admin" login.)
Start with trying to deal with this:
For the past several weeks I have been experiencing internet drops from my router.
What happens when you see this?
WiFi dies? Wired Ethernet stops working?
What do the LEDs on the R6230 look like? What firmware version do you have on the device?
A number is more useful than "the latest". (It may not be by the time people read this.) There can also be newer versions, or "hot fixes", that do not show up if you check for new firmware in the browser interface.
It might also help if you told people what the modem is in front of this router, if there is one. The make and model number could be useful. Is it, by any chance, also a router, with a set of LAN ports on the back?
The reason for asking is that a lot of people turn up here trying to put a router behind a modem that is also a router. That can complicate troubleshooting.- mrkellybrownjrAspirant
I first want to thank you for taking time to respond to my plea for help. I understand that I did not forward enough information earlier. In retrospect I was running on emotion and usually that isn't me. Your message grounded me, so now I'll give you as much info as I can.
I don't know if there is a warning of any sort that the router is going to drop the internet connection. I only know when I get messages that I need to connect to the internet for certain functions to work, as some of the functions are "local" and don't need the internet except to send info, evals reports and alarms.
When I look at the lights on the router they are they same number and configuration as always. I always try a reboot first to see if I get lucky, (I never do), and wind up with an easy repair. When that doesn't work I move on to the next, which is when I try to do a factory reset by pressing the reset button. I wait that process through and when that does not improve the situation I go through the hard reset process.
I first turn off the router then I unplug it. After 2 minutes I plug the router back in. 2 minutes after that I turn the power back on back on. I watch as I watch as the 3rd light of the array comes on and begin flickering I also have my monitoring device, (Apple IPAD 8th Gen), turned off and disconnected. After giving each device minutes to initiate/reset I again try connecting my devices to the internet, mostly to no avail. Then I yell and cuss for about 10 minutes, (I also have diabetes so I can't kick anything, though I threaten to). Then I try to go into the app and I am often, (often, because I do manage to get in sometimes using the password I provided), denied access. This is why I do not begin with the app. I spend so much time in the anger/frustration cycle that I fall asleep. When I awake, I'm a bit calmer and can use a bit of reasoning and problem solving skill. I look to see if there is an update available. There is no modem with my network, we plug our Ethernet cable directly into the wall. I have a splitter I use running back from the router to my computer so that I can keep my desktop connected and not run wireless, as I have a security system it must manage. At this moment I am unable to open the app, as it is not accepting my password, (and I only use a few throughout all my devices, (another reason it frustrates me so).so at this exact moment I am unable to identify the issue, but I know that even when the router is not connecting, I still have internet.
I am sorry. I began this message days ago but wound up in the hospital these past days.I'm stable now, thanks, but I forgot my train of thought . I'm quite tired now, but I did not want to leave you hanging with this issue. perhaps if you'd continue asking questions I can answer them fully, I'm just so tired right now.
Thank you.
