R6400 - ready share access to HDD by MacBook Air stopped working
I am running an external hard drive (Western Digital vis usb) through the router (dual band gigabit, R6400 Smart WiFi router, firmware version v1.0.1.42). I am using a MacBook Air (2012 - High Sierra 10.13.6) and iPhone/IPads to access the drives. FileBrowser app on the mobile devices continues to work fine (and quickly) locating files on the ReadyShare connected drives - new and old.
Up until two days ago there were infrequent connection and slow performance issues with the Mac accessing the ReadyShare but nothing major. I added a second external HDD (G-Drive via usb) to the router yesterday. I work with a lot of pictures and video files, so I want to allow for backup safety and still access all my content from whatever device I am using - including pushing the video and pics to the TV (Apple TV and Smart TV).
The new drive is functioning okay - it appears to have partioned properly and whatever I save there is readily accessible from all devices - mobile and Mac. I intend to use the new drive for family sharing of files, pics and video.
The original external drive connected to the router displays in the list and shows the main folders - after an extended delay - but is unable to show the files, pics and movies and subfolders beyond that. That original external drive holds nearly all of my data - I had to clear the Mac for a large project so I moved everything there - but the external HDD is still less than 25% full.
I have read through the major documents here and elsewhere - taking the steps for firmware updates, rebooting etc. I am not up on all the jargon but can find my way around with direction. I apologize for the wordiness but I am open to suggestion for fixing this problem.
This has been resolved! Not sure why but it is working. I do know what I changed though.
There was a printer plugged into the back USB port. I removed the printer and plugged in the HDD. After a few moments, the white light for the rear USB slot went on and the readyShare drive became visible in Finder on my MAC and all the data is there. For the record I tried moving the drive back to the front USB slot and the light for the front USB port remained off and the drive did not show up on Finder.
Is it possible for a USB slot to go "bad" out of the blue?
Regardless - the router is functioning well enough. Thank you for the service call - it coincided with my getting the router to recognize the HDD but it was still appreciated. The unit is way too old to be covered by a warranty but it is back to doing the job.
Thanks again!
