R6400 Router Firmware Update warning: All existing internet connections will be terminated.
When I click on "Upload" during the firmware upgrade process, a window pops up warning that "All existing internet connections will be terminated."
Is it safe to continue?
Yes.
The upgrade process has to rewrite the router's internal software. It can't do that while it is connected to the Internet.
At the end of the process it will restart the router to complete the update.
You may also have to reset the router to factory settings after the firmware flash.
New firmware sometimes introduces changes that are not compatible with the old configuration.
So a factory reset is the first thing to try if you have problems with new firmware.
Backup your configuration first. Netgear does not advises restoring old settings into new firmware, but if resetting does not fix your problem, and you have complicated settings, you might want to restore them.

Thanks much michaelkenward - I appreciate your assistance.
With the potential complications, I'm still not sure whether I should upgrade since I have an 5-year old HP that has been upgraded from Windows 7 to Windows 10. Do you have any knowledge about that?
If the upgrade goes to plan, you won't notice the difference, apart from the brief gap in Internet access. It won't be worse than a brief power cut.
As this is a router, you probably also have a modem between it and the Internet. The upgrade will do nothing to the modem. It won't lose its Internet link.
Most people have no problems with these upgrades, but if the worst comes to the worst and things do go wrong, you can plug into the modem and keep on browsing while you mend whatever breaks.
The reason for applying the update is down to security. There have been reports of some, mostly theoretical, vulnerabilities that could let wicked people get in and wreck your computers.
