r6400v2 - slow to sync connected to Spectrum Cable end
I have had this Netgear Router for just about 2 years.
Without any changes in system or service, the router began have trouble syncing to any devices.
There is a latent period of 3 -10 seconds when opening new url.
It sometimes can be cured by switching to a the alternate 2.8 network but usually must reboot wifi modem.
firmware v1.0.4.106
Is this the sign of incipient failure?

There's a newer firmware. 1.0.4.128
you might try installing that and doing a factory reset/reinstall.

Sorry, I am decidedly non-technical.
I will click on a url, some time goes by- a couple of seconds, the url appears in the address line, again some time (seconds) passes and then the content appears.I have tried to update firmware through the 'Nighthawk' app but always get an error message. 'there was a problem checking firmware update.'

Not something I usually associate with "syncing", which could mean many tbhings. Sadly, there can be lost of things that get in the way of browsing.
Does it happen with a different browser?

The app is not the best way to update.
There are a couple of other options. This is the safest and mostb rfe;iable:
How do I manually upgrade firmware to my NETGEAR router? | Answer | NETGEAR Support
It can also seem a bit intimidating. So another options is the browser graphical user interface (GUI).
Manuals are always a good place to start.
Visit the support pages:
Support | NETGEAR
Feed in your model number and check the documentation for your hardware.
That page will also have any software, firmware and drivers for your device, if they exist.
Check the section in the manual on updating the firmware.
