In leiu of writing an overly drawn-out post, I had hoped to make it concise and perhaps find someone who has had the same or similar experience with the R6900v2. But, if more detail is called for, then here it is.
Well....going back through the 3 different articles/posts (first, second, third), I redid the last step in the 3rd post a couple times and viola! It eventually took.
So to fix this issue, I did the following. I tried it once to no avail, did a power recycle and did the push on bootup and it worked.
tftp -i 192.168.1.1 put R6900v2-V1.2.0.16_1.0.1.img

A flashing white power LED is a sign that you are on recovery mode.
This means that the TFTP approach is not the same as the way you do things with a flashing amber LED.
That is why your solution worked.
Netgear really does need to write better notes on this issue. I only found out about recovery mode because I had to use it for some beta tests that required even more "magic" on the router.
