Solved

router signal fades and resumes, or fades and drops and then resumes.

My previous Netgear router had a strong, consistent signal, but my current one does not (age about 6 months); same Netgear model (WNDR3400v3). I read that sometimes having the modem and router close together could be the problem, and they were within a foot of each other, so I moved one to the desktop and left one on the floor but the problem remains (the previous router and modem were next to each other and did not have this problem). It has been suggested I buy a more powerful router but I’m wondering if that’s truly a solution as it doesn’t address what’s affecting the current signal.  Thoughts?

  • thank you.  I downloaded and also accessed netgear settings at which time discivered there was an update available which I downloaded.  interestingly that may have resolved the issue as the signal is now consistently strong.  thanks for your help and I now know what to look for in the future.

  • First of all distance between router and modem has no effect on WiFi radio signal. Mine are sitting side by side. Do you use WiFi signal surveillance utility like inSSIDer of Acrylic?  If not, down load one and run it to see yourWiFi signal environment. Pick the best channel and try it.
