slow connection Netgear N600 router

Hello and thank you for your help.

Can my four- or five-year-old router be slowing down my wifi speed? If so, are there software updates to improve the router's speeds, or do I need a new router?

The wireless in my building has recently been updated, and I can only access the 79 - 89 mps when my laptop is plugged directly into the ethernet. When I go through the router I top out at 25 - 35 mps.

My router is a Netgear N600 Wireless Dual Band Router WNDR3400v3.

Thank you for any help you can provide.

  • The wndr3400 isn't gigabit capable. Its only a 10/100mbps ethernet device. That's going to be the bottleneck.

You might have only had it for 4-5 years but it was originally made 10 years ago. Its pretty old and just a N600 device.

If you're wanting faster speeds, I'd look at upgrading hardware. A firmware upgrade isn't going to fix its hardware limitations.

I agree with previous post, you might want to upgrade your router for faster speeds, especially since you're paying for high speeds.

Thank you for your advice. I will indeed start shopping for a new router.
